Threats to koalas in Queensland

Koalas in Queensland are under threat in most of their range, be it as a result of habitat degradation, urban development, road trauma, dog attacks or disease. Perhaps the greatest threat to the future of koalas is habitat loss. Queensland is a world leader in land clearing.

The population of koalas that inhabits the south east corner of Queensland is amongst the most if not the most significant koala population in Australia. It comprises a significant number of animals in close proximity to urban infrastructure. Unfortunately, the overlapping nature of the land use boundaries of the human beings and the koalas in this area means that our activities are bound to impact upon the koalas. Whether the koala population in this area will survive for future generations to see is not clear.

Many koalas are killed, injured and orphaned in south east Queensland every year. If you happen to encounter a sick or injured koala, contact the Moggil Koala Hospital.
